Granny's table radio

Sometimes we’re offered equipment for repair that makes you wonder whether it’s really worth taking on the job… This is one of those cases: a Lumophon Violetta 400 table radio, made sometime around 1965? At the time, Lumophon was a subsidiary of the German brand Grundig, mainly producing domestic audio equipment. The story was that the tuning control had stopped working. In the end, it turned out that the radio had suffered so much corrosion due to moisture that the tuning capacitor had completely seized up.

Because of the sentimental value the radio had for its owner, we decided to give it a go anyway. We removed the offending component, cleaned it thoroughly and carefully put everything back together, also replacing the tuning cords. The radio is now playing beautifully again. Grandma would surely have been delighted with the result — and in any case, her granddaughter certainly was!
