Released in 1988, the KEF C35 was a historic bookshelf loudspeaker because it was the very first commercial model to feature KEF’s revolutionary Uni-Q coaxial driver array, placing the tweeter at the acoustic center of the woofer for improved stereo imaging.

Design and Technology

  • Uni-Q Driver: The C35 combined a 200 mm woofer with a 19 mm dome tweeter mounted directly in the middle. This point-source setup aimed for time-aligned sound.
  • Cabinet and Build: Built as a 2-way closed (sealed) box, the speaker used a single-piece molded plastic baffle holding the driver, attached to a chipboard/particle board cabinet.
  • Finishes: Available primarily in classic finishes like Black Ash (current version) and Walnut.

    Legacy and Reception

    • Market Impact: As noted by What Hi-Fi?, the C35 (alongside siblings like the C55, C75, and C95) paved the way for decades of Uni-Q evolution seen in modern high-end KEF lines.
