The Celestion Ditton 15XR, launched around 1977 by Rola Celestion in Ipswich, England, is an evolved, updated version of the iconic original Ditton 15 from 1966. The "XR" stands for extended response, featuring a redesigned soft-dome tweeter and modified drivers while keeping the famous Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR).
 
Origins and Evolution
The Ditton 15 Foundation: The original Ditton 15 debuted in 1966 and sold roughly 250,000 units, becoming one of the most successful bookshelf speakers of the era due to its compact size and deep bass.
The Shift to XR: Released in the late 1970s (c. 1977), the 15XR was engineered to refresh the classic design with updated components to modernize high-frequency output and transient response.
 
Technical Differences from the Original
The Tweeter: Replaced the classic HF1300 tweeter with a new soft-dome design (often noted as the HD1000), which featured a heavier magnet structure and an extended high-frequency range.
The Bass/Mid Driver: Retained the 8-inch main woofer concept, but adjusted the cone depth and magnet weight for tighter control.
The ABR System: Retained the rear-coupled 8-inch Auxiliary Bass Radiator (passive radiator), which allowed the small cabinet to acoustically fake the deep bass extension of a much larger floorstanding system.
 
The current units were restore using high-end Kef T27 soft dome tweeters from the same era.
