The BNS Combo is a compact, vintage 3-way/2-way bookshelf loudspeaker released by the Dutch manufacturer BNS (Berghe Noble Sound) during the mid-to-late 1980s as part of their original Music Line.
Origins & Brand Background
Company Foundation: BNS was founded in 1977 by Frans van den Berghe in Bladel (later moving to Loon op Zand, Netherlands). The name stands for Berghe Noble Sound with the slogan "zoals het werkelijk hoort" (as it truly should sound).
Music Line Era (1985–1988): During the mid-1980s, BNS launched its Music Line, which grouped models like the Combo, Quintet, and Symphony to target accessible, high-value consumer hi-fi.
The BNS Combo Design
Form Factor: A compact bookshelf or stand-mount enclosure (39 cm tall). Port in the front to improve bass extension.
Drivers & Components: Like many BNS speakers from that era, the Combo relied heavily on European driver components— featuring drivers from Audax (such as Audax mid/bass units and specialized tweeters). The woofer holds a dual voice coil (hence the 'secret' 3-way design).
Power & Sound: Typically rated around 60W to 80W power handling (with impedance around 8 ohms), known for a clean and direct vintage presentation typical of 1980s Dutch acoustic design.
Legacy & DIY/Modding: Due to their solid cabinet construction and quality European components, BNS Combo units remain popular on the European second-hand and vintage audio market, and they are frequently targeted by DIY audio enthusiasts for crossover upgrades or custom transmission-line builds.
These models were fully refurbished and got new capacitors in the cross-over filters. The sound is really amazing for it's size: low (contained) bass extension and crisp mid/highs.
