The Aristona SG1222 (frequently referred to simply as the Aristona 1222) is an automatic turntable released in 1976. It is highly regarded by vintage audio enthusiasts for its "space-age" retro aesthetic and its unique engineering pedigree under the Dutch electronics giant Philips.

Origin and the Philips Connection

Aristona was a long-running sub-brand of Philips used primarily in Europe to market consumer electronics. While sold as a more budget-friendly alternative to mainstream Philips hardware, many Aristona items shared identical internal mechanisms with high-end Philips models.

The Aristona 1222 is the direct sister model to the legendary Philips 22GA222 electronic turntable. It was launched as a successor to the iconic Philips 212/312 series, carrying forward many of their defining characteristics. Depending on the specific European country, this identical machine was also rebranded and distributed under sister labels like Erres (SG1222) and Dux (SG1222).

Design and Key Features

While the Philips 222 counterpart was typically housed in a sleek gray or silver plastic enclosure, the Aristona version was given a premium, distinctive dark wooden plinth casing. This visual flair has made the 1222 a standout choice for modern collectors seeking a "warm vintage" look.

Key specifications and features of the 1976 model include:

  • Electronic Touch Controls: It utilizes responsive touch-sensitive buttons ('tiptoetsen') backlit with LEDs to toggle Start, Stop, and speed selection.

  • Automated Record Tracking: The turntable automatically senses whether a 7-inch (17 cm) or 12-inch (30 cm) record is on the platter, adjusts the speed accordingly, and brings the tonearm safely to the edge.

  • Servo-Controlled Belt Drive: Built around a reliable belt-drive motor system that ensures stable playback speed with independent fine-tuning (pitch control) dials for 33 and 45 RPM.

  • Integrated Stylus Gauge: The tonearm rest features a built-in mechanical needle pressure weight gauge to easily verify proper tracking alignment.

  • Premium Factory Moving Magnet (MM) Cartridge: It originally shipped with a high-fidelity Philips Moving Magnet element.

Legacy and Rarity

The Aristona 1222 is widely considered one of the final "top-tier" belt-drive consumer systems produced by Philips before the industry pivoted aggressively toward Japanese-dominated direct-drive technology in the late 1970s and 1980s. Because fewer Aristona-branded wooden variants were manufactured compared to the standard plastic Philips 222, the 1222 is increasingly scarce on secondary markets today.

This model is in near mint condition and was fully serviced. It was equipped with the vintage high-end Philips GP412 cartridge, with a new GP412-II Tonar stylus (eBay prices up to €300: see internet for specifications and current pricing). Also, the on/off switch was replaced with a new version, as this may be prone to failure after 50+ years. The unit's tone arm mechanism and disc speed is very precise and it operates very silent.
