The Realistic Optimus X-30 is a rare vintage loudspeaker released around 1980–1981 by RadioShack's parent company, Tandy Corporation, specifically for select European and international markets via regional Tandy/RadioShack catalogs. Unlike standard North American Realistic models, the X-30 series featured distinct European-sourced components, such as high-grade Isophon drivers, built-in signal level VU meters on the baffle, and front-mounted frequency adjustment controls.

Design and Specifications

  • Type: 3-way passive standmount / bookshelf loudspeaker
  • Drivers: Equipped with a large ~25 cm (10-inch) woofer featuring durable rubber surrounds, paired with specialized midrange and high-frequency units (often utilizing West German Isophon component assembly)
  • Distinctive Feature: Integrated active VU meters on the front face to monitor audio signal levels, alongside adjustable level controls for high and mid frequencies
  • Impedance: 8 Ohms
  • Frequency Response: Deep low-end reach starting down near 30 Hz up to 20,000 Hz

    Market Context & Legacy

    • Tandy / RadioShack Distribution: In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Tandy Corporation distributed unique audio gear through German and European Tandy catalogs that differed significantly from standard US offerings.
    • Collector Status: Because they were produced in limited quantities outside of North America and utilized premium European drivers rather than standard budget paper cones, X-30 models are uncommon finds today. Vintage audio collectors prize them for their unique aesthetic—especially the functional VU meters—and robust build quality.
