During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Philips faced fierce competition from Japanese manufacturers who dominated the global hi-fi market. In response, Philips designed the 22AH307 alongside its close sibling, the 22AH308, utilizing an optimized combination of power and low distortion to appeal to serious audiophiles.

The amplifier features a distinct brushed metal aesthetic typical of the era, combining premium internal engineering with ample sound control options. Its internal circuitry shows a blend of classic Western European design and Japanese-sourced components (like Alps switches and potentiometers), which was common during this era as European brands globalized their supply chains.

Technological Highlights

  • Motional Feedback (MFB) Support: The defining historic feature of this amplifier is its built-in compatibility with the famous Philips Motional Feedback (MFB) speaker line. The 22AH307 includes dedicated pre-out connections specifically designed to output a 3V signal directly to active MFB speakers.
  • Two groups of standard passive 4 Ohm speakers are also supported.
  • Triple Output Protection: To safeguard expensive audio setups, Philips integrated a triple-layer protection circuit into the power stage to prevent damage from short circuits or overheating.
  • DC-Coupled Power Amps: The inclusion of direct-coupled (DC) amplification reduced phase distortion and ensured cleaner, more accurate bass reproduction.
  • Comprehensive Filtering: It featured versatile control panels, allowing users to toggle specialized loudness contouring, high-frequency noise filters, and low-frequency rumble filters to clean up old vinyl recordings.
