The NAD 1020 and its revised variants (like the 1020A) stem from NAD's legendary 1980s Series 20 line. Introduced shortly after the iconic NAD 3020 integrated amplifier, the 1020-series units took the exact high-performing phono stage and preamplifier circuitry of the 3020, dropped the power amp section, and repackaged it into a budget-friendly standalone preamp.

Origins and Design Roots

  • The 3020 Connection: NAD (New Acoustic Dimension) designed the 1020 layout directly from the preamp portion of the world-famous NAD 3020, engineered by Bjørn Erik Edvardsen.
  • Cost-Effective Engineering: By omitting the heavy power amplifier components and scaling down the power supply, NAD created an economical, high-value standalone preamplifier.
  • Production Era: The original NAD 1020 launched around 1980, with the refined 1020A and subsequent revisions following through the mid-1980s, keeping the signature understated gray-olive aesthetic.

    Key Features

    • Renowned Phono Stage: Included a highly praised, flexible phono input with adjustable capacitance settings tailored for moving magnet (MM) and moving cool (MC) cartridges.
    • Minimalist Control Layout: Provided essential tone controls, a loudness switch, and a headphone output powered via the internal preamp circuitry.
