The KEF KHT 2005 (often referred to as the KHT 2000.5 or 2005.2/2005.3 series) is an iconic home theater "Egg" speaker system launched in the early 2000s. It revolutionized lifestyle surround sound by packing high-fidelity Uni-Q driver technology into radical, cast-aluminum curved enclosures that bridged the gap between interior design and audiophile performance.

Evolution and Timeline

  • 2000/2001 (KHT2005 Original): KEF launched the original KHT2005 package featuring four HTS2001 satellites, one HTC2001 center speaker, and the PSW2000 subwoofer. It stunned the audio market by offering true midrange clarity from a tiny footprint.
  • 2004 (KHT2005.2 / 2000.5 variants): An updated iteration refined the iconic egg-shaped cast-aluminum satellite design, pairing them with upgraded drivers and the PSW2010 powered subwoofer to improve low-end punch and placement flexibility.
  • 2009 (KHT2005.3): A later revision introduced high-gloss finishes and integrated the Kube 2 subwoofer, keeping the classic aesthetic competitive through the end of the decade.

Core Technologies

  • Uni-Q Driver Array: Places the tweeter precisely at the acoustic center of the midrange/bass cone, creating a wide and uniform sound dispersion pattern ideal for movie soundtracks and music alike.
  • Cast-Aluminum Shells: The egg shape completely eliminated internal standing waves, while the heavy metal alloy provided a rigid, resonance-free cabinet.
  • Flexible Mounting: The unique desk stands doubled as wall-mounting brackets allowing the eggs to twist vertically or horizontally
  • These units come with study metal standards for easy positioning in a listening space.
